Reducing Risk During the Holiday Season

The holidays are in full swing which means that scammers are gearing up to put their fraud schemes in motion. Here are some tips that Morgan Stanley shared to help keep everyone safe during the holiday season.

  • When receiving shipping notifications, use caution before clicking a link that could be sent from a fraudulent source.
  • Be aware of any phone call or email about your credit card. When in doubt, contact your credit card company directly using the number on the back of the card.
  • Before donating to a charity, read this article on how to avoid common scams.
  • If you receive a holiday e-Card, be wary; delete any e-Card that asks you to download a file and don’t enable flash.
  • If you are downloading any new apps to a mobile device, do your research first. Fake apps are used to install malware and/or steal personal information.
  • If traveling, keep a close watch on mobile devices, e.g. smartphones and laptops; never pack devices in checked baggage.
  • Avoid sharing your travel plans on social networking sites, which can leave you and your personal residence particularly vulnerable to theft.
